I am very pleased to see a Korean language edition added to the list of translations that have been done for R. Buckminster Fuller’s 1969 book Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth. This year we have seen the release of editions from China, Italy and Russia! These, joining current editions from France, Japan and Slovenia—and previous editions from Brazil and Germany.
Ten years after writing the introduction for the 2008 Lars Muller edition of this book, Spaceship Earth is certainly in a much more critical position—and more in need of an workable operating manual ! I write this while nearby the largest fire in California’s recorded history blazes, only nine months after the then largest fire in California history blazed in south. I often hear myself saying to people I meet, the state of the world "is much worse than we realize—and much better than we realize.” Life on Earth is under siege from our own species' ignorance; and at the same time, the design revolution which Bucky championed is bringing a new generation of tools and understanding that can significantly reduce the human footprint, paving the possibility for the manifestation of a truly regenerative world.
One of Bucky’s core questions was “what can the little individual do?” What is the trimtab that can turn our dire predicament around? In his own answer: during the last four months of Bucky’s life he did four day-long events around the United States entitled “Integrity Day”, to crowds of over 1000 people each. To paraphrase, he said we have everything we need to make the world work for all of Life—already on the shelf! The trimtab Bucky suggested was enough human beings demonstrating enough individual integrity to catalyze this great transformation.
From the February 26, 1983 event:
". . . to come back to why we’re here today, Integrity Day. . . [This] particular experiment [ humans on Earth ]—don’t forget, we really are in question . . . I have to say, I think that we are in some kind of final examination as to whether human beings . . . now with this capability to acquire information and to communicate—whether we’re really qualified to take on the responsibility we’re designed to be entrusted with. This is not a matter of an examination of the types of governments, nothing to do with politics, nothing to do with economic systems. It has to do with the individual. Does the individual have the courage to really go along with the truth? . . . Are we really going to carry on with our integrity?"
It all finally comes back to each one of us.
Each of us makes a difference—
the only question is what difference will we make!
Think of it: every iota, of every act, of every moment of our lives is a lever which can provide a force to turn our great Spaceship Earth to safe harbor.

"I know we have the option. I know we have the capability to destroy ourselves . . . I think it’s touch-and-go; but I think we’re going to make it. But don’t let up! Don’t let up, or we won’t make it. Keep at your integrity more than ever in all your life before!
So thank you darling people."
