SHELTER
In 1930 at the age of 35, Fuller sold his Navy life insurance policy to finance taking over T-Square magazine in Philadelphia and renamed it Shelter magazine. Fuller created many designs for shelter such as: The Stockade Building System, with James Monroe Hewlett—his father in law (1922); The 4D Tower House, a hexagonal apartment building flyable by Zeppelin (1927); The Dymaxion House, an all-steel, super modern, Model-T type mass production unit (1927); The Wichita House, a prototyped Dymaxion House (1946); Triton City, a gigantic, tetrahedral shaped floating city (1967); Old Man River City, a crater-like mega structure for terracing (1971); and many other forms of shelter throughout his life, including his own personal homes. All nicely summed by the title of a book chapter, “Universal Requirements for a Dwelling Advantage” (1963).
